At Mangan PDG, we’re in the business of performing hi-Potential testing on various equipment, such as vacuum circuit breakers, vacuum motor starters, medium and high voltage cables, and switchgear bus and want to help you succeed with your next project.
Depending on the product that will be tested, and the test standard, the hipot test can either be performed using AC or DC potential. AC current is bi-directional in nature, whereas DC current flows in one direction.
You may be wondering what is AC hi-potential testing, and why do I need it? Mainly, it involves using a high potential (voltage) to test insulation. The testing can be useful in helping you develop a process that builds high-quality cables and wire harnesses. You want to ensure that insulation is doing its job. Therefore, AC hi-potential testing is an excellent choice because it uses a high voltage source to confirm this process is working correctly. If you’re going to be able to measure the cable quality, it’s vital to look at the resistive current. It should be very low on every cable and shouldn’t vary that much from one cable to the next.
A hipot test starts with all of the points in a cable held at 0V. Next, a single wire or network of connected points (called a net) is disconnected from 0V and connected to the AC source. The total current that flows is measured. If too much current is flowing, the cable fails the hipot test.
We put our customer’s safety first and always ensure that the testing procedures follow regulations and are conducted safely.
